The
National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA),
one of the NLMCC’s partners, is a major electrical
standards developer, accredited by the American National
Standards Institute (ANSI). Since 1997, NECA has been
developing and publishing a family of ANSI-approved
industry standards that define acceptable workmanship
and quality for electrical construction.
The National Electrical Installation Standards (NEIS)
are organized as a series of installation manuals for
electrical systems and products. They are intended
for use by construction buyers and specifiers and can
be referenced in specifications and drawings for electrical
construction projects. In this way, they become a mandatory,
enforceable part of the contract documents.
The NLMCC supports the development of standards such
as the NEIS, because they provide a method for communicating
quality. For example, architects and engineers can
use standards to specify a level of quality and professionalism
for electrical installations; code officials can refer
to them for guidance as to what constitutes "accepted
industry practice" when inspecting installations;
and building owners, property managers, and tenants
can have the assurance that electrical installations
are performed in accordance with widely-accepted standards
for reliability, quality, and professionalism.
